Jen Sincero is a #1 New York Times bestselling author, success coach and motivational cattle prod who’s helped countless people transform their personal and professional lives via her products, speaking engagements, newsletters, seminars and books.

The title of this book was what caught my attention.

I learnt so many new words but one that would stick with me for a long long time – BADASSERY. This is the first place I ever came across the word. She used this a lot in her book and even if the meaning is in the word itself, I would like to clearly define it for the sake of this post.

Badassery‘ according to urban dictionary means:
Engaging in seemingly impossible activities and achieving success in a manner that renders all onlookers completely awestruck.

The second definition says, of or having qualities of a badass“.

She talks about self-love, forgiveness, procrastination, financial success, extensively about possibility mentality/the power of positive thinking and so much more.

She talked deeply about self-love and listed out easy to follow ways we can learn to love ourselves.

Be grateful for all you are and all that you’re becoming.

In Yes Please, Amy Poehler talked about apologies and how a simple “I am sorry” can go a long way.
This Queen of badass made me understand that gratitude is also a big deal. Saying thank you goes a long way too and it’s not just about manner now but sincerely having and showing deep appreciation for the many miracles of life.
She hammered tremendously on faith mixed with gratitude.
Jen took me on a journey, carefully addressing all my issues one after the other. I’ve never read a self-help book like this.

Jen gave me a big spank in this department. She spoke about something I have – and so many other people have also – been struggling with for years now. FORGIVENESS. I don’t easily let go of a wrong done towards me, I hold grudges a lot. Don’t get me wrong, I smile easily, I laugh hard, I play carelessly but the smallest things can make me blow a fuse. No, I don’t have anger issues, I just find it really difficult to forgive people.
Chapter 15 of this book was where I decided that Jen (alongside Amy and Sophia) is my new online best friend and if I see her, any day anytime, I would drag her to the nearest ice-cream joint and get her the biggest, most expensive best flavor of ice-cream there. You all know what ice-cream means to me and ohh she better like ice-cream too!

Seriously, chapter 15 of this book brought Jen inside my head, it was like she was speaking directly to me, walking me through the why’s and how’s of forgiveness. She was successful because I was able to forgive this person. Someone I couldn’t forgive for years even after reading various self-help books and forgiveness articles online. I am finally free. I forgave this person! I even wrote a letter for this person! Have you read it? You should.

This book is extremely quotable. For the quote lovers, this book is for you! Well, duh! It’s a self-help book, what did you expect? Infact, the quotes were so many I have decided to make a separate post for it.

Personal Verdict

A must read: You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero | Book Review

Of course, this is an obvious statement. From this review, you can tell that Jen is a celebrated voice in the world of self development.

I got bored at some point

This book is a complete 155pages of self-help and motivational talks and quotes. In as much as I like motivational quotes and everything, I got bored at some point and had to drop the book for like a week but still came back to finish it up. So, yeah, you might get bored.

Keep an open mind, but not so open that your brains fall out.
Carl Sagan

Not all her advice is practical (in my own opinion).
I read a part where she shared a story about a friend of hers who decided to buy an expensive house because she loved the house and she ‘believed’ she would get it no matter what. She also mentioned that that same friend wasn’t so moneyed. So, when I read that part, I was like “hello, what did I miss? How did she get the money suddenly, how?? WHAT DID I MISS???!!!”.

What did I miss???

(It still didn’t make the book less awesome to me though).

Jen Sincero didn’t take her spirituality with levity, I exceptionally love that about her and I would like to commend her for it. Which brings me to this; she chose some specific names to call the higher force – God for Christians – ; “the source energy”, “the universe”, “vortex” etc. So while reading, don’t get lost. Even if I don’t write this part, you wouldn’t get lost if you follow her carefully.

Jen Sincero advices us to find our source energy and STAY CONNECTED to him/it (whatever your source energy is).
If you’re a non-believer of God or some sort of higher supernatural force, this shouldn’t stop you from reading this book. You can choose to do what my atheist friend did; skip it wherever you see it and move on to learning how to better your life.

Buy the book here on Amazon.

By the end of You Are a Badass, you’ll understand why you are how you are, how to love what you can’t change, how to change what you don’t love, and how to use the force to kick some serious ass.

If you want to become a badass, i.e. you walk around so lit up that you shoot sunbeams out of yer eyeballs😁 then this is the book for you!
Also note that it is not about just reading, to start living that awesome life you so desire, YOU NEED TO PRACTICE!
