Book Review || 8 Lessons I Learned From #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso

AUTHOR: Sophia Amoruso

GENRE: Autobiography/ Non-fiction

I’ve always wanted to share book reviews on books I’ve read. I’ve just been talking and talking without actually writing. But that’s over now. I’m going to start with one of the best books I’ve probably read all my life: #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso.

Life Lessons Learned From #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso

#GIRLBOSS is a book written by the CEO of Nastygal, Sophia Amoruso. In this book, Sophia narrates her life experiences while growing up. Sophia didn’t just tell us her life story, she shared her mistakes and most importantly, gave loads of sensible advice I just want to turn into my own personal daily mantra.

She brazenly tells it all – without holding back – was a dropout, a nomad, a thief, a shitty student, and a lazy employee.
Today, through hard work – among other qualities – she is the CEO of a $100-million-plus business with a fifty-thousand square-foot office in Los Angeles, a distribution and
fulfillment center in Kentucky, and three
hundred and fifty employees.

Now, who doesn’t want that? Want to know how to become a #GIRLBOSS like her? Then grab a copy of this book now!

These are the 8 lessons I very much related to:

She had a lot of ” shitty” jobs -as she calls it in the book- and she moved from one job to another. However, she saw this as some kind of experimentation that gave her perspective and a diversity of experience prior to starting nasty gal.

According to her, when she started that eBay store, all she wanted to do was sell vintage online while satisfying her customers. She did put it in hardwork but she didn’t plan that “okay, in 7years, I would be a multimillionaire”. No, she didn’t have everything figured out. Yes, she did all those shitty jobs but neither of them made her happy.

She found her passion and worked hard at it. Gradually, while embracing all the randomness, that passion turned into her paycheck and guess what now? SHE CAN NEVER GET FIRED. Why? Because, SHE’S THE BOSS.

🔴 You’ve got to work for what you want

Handwork + brainwork = Success

Life is too short. Don’t be lazy.

Sophia Amoruso

If you want to be successful, you have to work! And you have to work h a r d and above all, work smart.

The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.

“Fortune only comes to those who actually get off their asses and get stuff done”.

She didn’t find nasty gal by sitting in the comfort of her home. She created nasty gal. Opportunities didn’t just come knocking overnight, she created the doors.
There is no such thing as luck.

I read somewhere that If you don’t ask, the answer will always be no because you can’t expect the world to read your mind. Sophia puts it this way: It’s as simple as saying “hey, can I have that?”.
But if you eventually ask and you are told no. Don’t. Accept. It!

It takes a special kind of stubbornness to succeed as an entrepreneur.

Sophia Amoruso

After six months of launching her website, Sophia started approaching brands to take her business to the next level. If Sophia had accepted the no Jeffery Campbell told her when she approached him, NastyGal probably wouldn’t have amount to what it is today.

Again, another thing I love about this book is that Sophia spilled a lot of sensible tips in all areas. In fact, she did a great job when it came to the money part. She didn’t use the boring usual save & invest tips I always see online; instead she used a different style to get her message across.

Life Lessons Learned From #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso
You can spend, nobody is saying you shouldn’t spend. But do not spend more than you have/earn.
Know how to handle the dollars/pound/naira (whatever currency).

This one financial lesson is a tough pill for me to swallow.

Money looks better in the bank than on your feet.

Sophia Amoruso

One way you can do this is to learn how to live on a budget. Knowing how much you have to spend for a certain amount of time – and doing it – is what I call living on a budget.

A balanced budget often equals a balanced life.

T. D Jakes

When you’ve written down the plan, budget and everything. And your expenses is looking too much and higher than you’re earning a month. Make some adjustments. What can you do to make it balanced?
Live within your means. Know the difference between what you want and what you need.

🔴 The Power of Your mind
Ever come across that Bible verse that says: “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he”.

Treat your mind like fine china. What are your daily thoughts? Are you more optimistic or pessimistic about your future/business? You’ll miss the positive things in your life if you focus too much on the negative. In simpler terms,

Magical thinking was a very important tool that helped Sophia in her business. She talked so deeply about it here. She explains magical thinking as the ability to visualize and project yourself into the professional and personal life that you want.
Today, this #GIRLBOSS (me, of course) is saying to her fellow #GIRLBOSSES who might be reading this; begin to visualize. Visualize growth. Visualize success. Visualize consecutive wins. Visualize unending success. Visualize back-to-back good news in your business/life/career/education but don’t just sit there and expect all these to happen.

🔴 There Are Secret Opportunities Hidden Inside Every Failure
If you tried something and you failed at it, it doesn’t mean you’re stupid or you’re so dumb you can’t do what everyone seems good at. Maybe it’s not just for you, maybe that’s not where you are meant to be. It just means that you’re needed somewhere else.

Find a place where you can flourish.

Find a place where you are needed. Find something you’re really good at and when you do, focus so well on it, don’t suck at by it and watch your self grow.

This is one great mantra especially for entrepreneurs. While Sophia worked, her priority numero uno was CUSTOMERS’ SATISFACTION.
Treat everything with utmost care, every little detail matters as it is the small things that can make or break a/any business. What do your customers like? How was the feedback from the last product you made? Did they want more or you had to come home with extra because they didn’t like it. If they wanted more, then it’s a lesson, keep making more of it and find more ways to improve it. If you had to come home with extra because it didn’t sell as well as you expected it to, it’s still a lesson, dump or work more on the idea by doing more research.

🔴 No matter where you are in life, you’ll save a lot of time by not worrying too much about what other people think about you.

I think this very much explains itself.

After smart money woman by Arese Ugwu, #GIRLBOSS is another book I really enjoyed reading and I don’t mind reading again and again and again. Therefore, I give it a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ rating!

PS: There were more lessons in this book, but I just picked my 8 best to tell you about. Besides, telling you more than these would only make me summarize the entire book – which I already nearly did -. These 8 really resonated well with me and I wanted to share them with you to motivate you into grabbing a copy.
#GIRLBOSS is, for lack of a better term, amazeballs!

Yes! Don’t spend more than you earn. Even when your salary increases, it doesn’t mean you should increase your spending. It only means you should increase your saving. Thank you for stopping by Abraham 💕
